Please reduce the police budget & re-invest the money in pubic services. Everything in our city is starving except for the police budget. It's time to fix it. Thank you

I am resident of D2 and recent OUSD Grad. I fully support Bas and Kaplan's budget amendments. We need to reallocate OPD funds to programs that actually support the community and directly address the issues that lead to systemic poverty, oppression and racism and not a police department that abuses and misuses power.

Oakland's police budget is bloated and other city services are suffering from lack of funds. These budget amendments are a crucial first step towards police reform that will benefit every resident of the city. This is a moment of political momentum and energy that is unprecedented in recent years and voters are ready for substantive changes to Oakland policing. Oakland has the chance to be on the right side of history and I hope that the City Councilmembers understand the gravity of their votes.

I am a resident of District 3, and I support the Anti-Police Terror Project’s demand to defund the Oakland police by 50% starting with Councilmember Bas’ proposal to defund a portion of the police budget today.

I am supporting the leaders of my community to work towards creating a safe place for everyone in our community to thrive. Prioritizing mental health within our healthcare system, along with catering our critical response to these issues, is crucial for nurturing a community back to health.

I am a District 1 resident. I fully support defunding the Oakland Police Department. Their presence in my neighborhood has never been helpful, and is usually militarized, threatening, and dangerous to our community. Oakland needs to take the lead in re-imagining public safety.

I'm writing to share my support for Bas and Kaplan's budge amendment. The OPD is a bloated organization with no accountability and too many dollars, shoveled into archaic and brutal policing. This amendment is not only fiscally responsible, but is also morally necessary. OPD has been targeting black communities and perpetrating sexual misconduct and rape for too long. Oakland City Council, protect your citizens, defund your police.

I am a resident of Oakland, and I fully support reallocating current budget funds that are put towards the Oakland Police Department. This money should be given to community programs, education, and to helping the homeless. I support the Anti-Police Terror Project’s demand to defund the Oakland police by 50% starting with Council-member Bas’ proposal to defund a portion of the police budget today. This change is fundamental.

As a resident of District 1 and a DSA member, I fully support the re-direction of a significant sum (double-digit percentage points) of funds allocated to the OPD towards resources that can better address the housing, education, and infrastructural improvements this city desperately needs. Investments in the community, queer or otherwise benefits you too.

Another attempt by council member Kaplan to steal tax dollars away from it's indented use.

I support a reallocation of funds from the Police budget to have mental health professionals on hand to respond to these needs in neighborhoods rather than a police-directed response which emphasizes force and punishment rather than treatment and care. Oakland residents deserve better than military response to societal problems of homelessness, mental health, and the demand for eradication of systemic racism.

I live in District 1. I have been watching this issue for a long time, and as an East Bay DSA member, I am ready, engaged, and set on staying active from now through the November vote and beyond. I call on you to support Bas' and Kaplan's budget amendments, with plans to defund OPD by 50% in the coming year. I call on you to read the community survey sent out by APTP which clearly outlines what OUR community wants to see refunded, instead of continuing to give inordinate funds to policing. I call on you to do what's right for Oakland.

I am a resident of District 1 and I strongly support Bas and Kaplan's budget amendments to reallocate funds from OPD this year. We cannot put off the need to move away from funding policing, and it's time for us to really start investing in our community. We cannot wait until next year to start making these changes.

I am a D2 resident and I strongly support the budget amendments by Kaplan and Bas. OPD's budget is bloated, funneling our precious and limited resources to an agency that has proven itself to be a threat to community safety and wellbeing. OPD antagonizes Oakland citizens as we simply try to live our lives. They are unbelievably hostile and incite fear with their presence, violating their oath to protect and serve. OPD must be defunded so that this critical money can be redistributed to community needs that actually protect, serve, and strengthen Oakland: housing, healthcare, education, parks, mental health services, etc. These resources are all disturbingly underfunded and under-resourced. This is common-sense, life saving effort and I am thankful to Bas and Kaplan for demonstrating profoundly critical leadership. I'm not sure what Oakland would do without you and I hope your example serves as a beacon for your fellow councilmembers and our mayor who has proven herself to also be antagonistic to the community that elected her.
